Senior Leadership Northeast Minutes February 17, 2009
The February 17, 2009 meeting of Senior Leadership Northeast was convened at the Colleyville Area Chamber of Commerce conference room at 9:00 AM by Chairman Ed Havran.
There were thirteen (13) individuals present representing five (5) Northeast Tarrant County Cities.
Kathy Welch from the Chamber welcomed the group to the Chamber. Kathy thanked the group for the donation of a DVD player to the Chamber. Later in the program, Mary Smith, the new President of the Chamber, visited with the group. Ed Havran briefed her on the history of the NE Senior Leadership, and offered the group’s support for future Chamber activities.
Craig Hayes, Committee Chair of the “Senior Employment Opportunities Program” being developed by a Southlake Seniors Group, spoke to the NE Senior Leadership Group hoping to generate widespread Tarrant County interest. The goal of his group is to organize senior employment workshops for seniors entering of re-entering the workforce. Objectives:
Present seniors with a list of companies that focus on employing seniors.
Have representatives from these companies either in a discussion panel or in a booth.
Have a general resume development session.
Have booths where HR professionals have one on one time to review resumes.
Provide interviewing techniques to seniors.
Have audience question/answer forum regarding revitalizing skills.
Caution seniors that an offer too good to be true are likely not true.
Discuss the importance of networking.
Kathy Farrel, from the Community Learning Center (CLC), Inc., with the North Central Texas Career Opportunities for Experienced Workers (COEW) Project, made a presentation about her organization’s goal. She was in the process of preparing a grant application which would be used to train/retrain older workers as well as other groups. She requested that the NE Senior Leadership support the grant application. David Baltimore made a motion that we support the grant, seconded by Jim Moore, and accepted by the membership. As a result of this resolution, Ed Havran signed a letter to Angela Traiforos, Executive Director of CLC, Inc.
David Baltimore answered question regarding preparation of 2008 tax reports. David supervises tax preparation efforts by AARP in NE Tarrant County.
